The entire movie was a metaphor. The characters were examples of different people, themes, settings (time periods). Characters from different walks of life.
"I've met my demons and they are many. I've seen the devil, and he is me."
No demons, no devil, no mirror. Just the darkest facets of the human mind reflected in this modern day cinematic masterpiece.
So the auction house didn't actually auction off anything?

However, there was most certainly a mirror in this movie.
there was no movie, the mirror (that doesn't exist) made you think that you watched a movie, when in fact you were fooled like the rest of us and watched nothing.

Every friggin movie that has some sort of mystical element or experimental factor will always have the same topic on the message boards. "THIS THING IN THE MOVIE DIDN'T EXIST" or "IT WAS A METAPHOR" Even though the mirror could still exist whilst still being a metaphor you dope.
The mirror clearly DID exist, that's not up for debate. Seriously, use logic next time, the film clearly toyed with the idea and then beat it down.
No the mirror was the only thing in the movie. There were no characters.
I would say my memory is not what it used to be. But I don't remember what my memory used to be.
Best alternative theory for this film that I've read so far. And summed up rather succinctly to boot.
I'm going to re-watch this film from the vantage point of: "There was no mirror."
If there was no mirror, they very cleverly managed to hide that fact. To me it appeared as though a rather large and conspicuous mirror was placed in front of the camera on numerous occasions in this movie. Moreover, the protagonists seemed oddly fixated on it. Noticing the mirror's absence under these circumstances presumably takes quite unusual powers of observation.
