The traffic light scene.

Just want to say, I love this movie. Very well made and excellent acting. However, did anyone else not get the scene at the traffic lights, where Joe rolled down his window to stare at that woman, and she looked uncomfortable, and then he rolled his window back up. Was it just to show that people are scared of him or what? Can anyone explain?

It's explained in the directors commentary: it's his ex-wife. He deleted an exposition scene that introduced her and he felt that it was better to leave this scene to create some sort of curiosity about the main characters life.

Personally, I disagree. The scene was completely confusing and created in my mind the sense that there was a sloppiness about the movie that it would contain random, unexplainable scenes.

I was thinking it must have been his ex by the way they looked at each other, but yeah... it was odd that we were supposed to just think whatever came to mind about it.

Interesting, without that deleted scene I was left assuming that it was the mother of the girl who moves in with him, since she mentions that a guy is back in town and unless I picked it up wrong it seemed like it was her mothers boyfriend.

Thanks for sharing what it actually was!

I just assumed it was one of the hookers from the brothel, trying to move up in the world and him eyeing her as if to say "I know who you are." but he doesn't draw attention or spoil it for her.

It makes sense being the ex, but even if it wasn't, I wouldn't find the scene troubling really.

I think she was his ex-wife, who -- he obviously realized in the scene -- was now with another man.

Kind of awkward and jarring for him.

reply

You are correct. That was his ex.

reply

I assumed it was ex, purely for the comments about Joe's grandchildren in town soon afterwards
