So the nanobots will also kill the person’s relatives

So how closely related does the relative have to be to the person the nanobots are coded for? Children? Nephews/Nieces? Cousins?

The movie isn’t very clear on this (and yes it’s all so that in the end Bond looks like he’s sacrificing himself for his daughter) and the thing is if you trace DNA back far enough through the fossil record basically every single organism on Earth is related to each other which would mean that every single nanobots would kill every single living creature on Earth. The movie didn’t do a very good job in defining what constitutes close enough matches in DNA for the nanobots to work which makes this entire plot point rather silly.

Too bad that little Russian didn’t get to kill the Diaspora …. Crime worldwide would plummet, especially in major cities 🏙

In one scene, they did mention "millions" of victims. So if the source DNA was "thousands" (also mentioned in the movie). So to go from a thousand exact matches to millions of total victims, it sounds quite broad, as that translates to around 1000 per match (depends on if thousands = 5000 and millions = 2M, for example). That's way more than all of your living parents, siblings, children, and cousins.

Each dose could wipe out one family tree, and he had lots of different versions.

reply

What constitutes being in the same family tree? If you want to go back far enough we are all in the same family tree.

reply

You mean you and I are related?

reply

Technically

reply

Its only immediate family that would be killed

reply

But your DNAs would show some major difference.

The DNA of children would be different from their parents, but the difference is not significant, there will be significant number of markers match.

So this is not an exact science, that depends on how different the DNAs are between related people. But I expect not many people, maybe 20 ~ 30 or something.

reply

So what constitutes a “not significant” difference?

reply

I think the number of genetic marker matches.

They said the nanobots could be designed to attack only the immediate family all the way to the entire race. The bots were designed to attack, with the poison from Safin's island used to actually kill the targets.
