Would have been better as mini-series

Just powered through the 5 1/2 hours of the directors cut. While I liked it (first part more than the second) and it is shot sometimes undeniably beautiful, the pacing would have been so much better in a 7(+-) episodes series format. It's just too much as two 2-3 hour films (that really are more or less one film).

They wouldn't have to change the editing much as it is already kind of episodic. Some of the "twists" (especially the ending) and – sometime repetitive – motives (like the trees/soul stuff) would work much better and could have been more important/dramatic/fleshed out when they had a bit more time to breath (even if not more time on screen, just between each episode). And the irritating change of the actors for the older characters wouldn't have been so harsh. I'm sure more people would have appreciated this story as the-new-high-production-value-edgy-Lars-von-Trier-mini-series.

Actually if they cut the film as it is in more parts with an opening and an ending I'm sure that I would have liked it more. Even binge-watching it (so it would have been ultimately the same experience), because you watch a series with an other mindset as a movie.

I think it worked perfectly as a 5 1/2 hour movie. I saw it in the theater, and was sceptical if I could make it through, but the time flew away. Between the two movies was a 30 minute break to catch my breath, and reflect on things.
Though I could see it work for some as a mini series, I would say it would maybe lose some of its power and perhabs charm. You get thrown so much information at you, that it would almost be too much to remember for weeks, just to keep up.
But thats just my thoughts.
