When the Irish friends see Eilis' bathing suit they're in awe and talking about it like it's revolutionary but then the other girl reveals hers and it is pretty much the same idea. What am I missing?
Nothing Earth-shaking, it wasn't the bathing suit itself. In Brooklyn Eilis learned the trick of wearing your bathing suit under your street clothes so you didn't have to actually change into it on the beach, as the other girl did by wrapping a towel around herself. Apparently by the 1950s the Irish had not yet thought of that trick.
Oh, that! Right! Thank you. Now I consider the Irish to be quite smart so it's surprising they would not have thought of that! It seems so elementary these days! Like "why wouldn't you?"?
That's the only difference I noticed about their bathing suits, that the other girl's suit was baggy but it still had what looked like underwear and a tankini over it so I was wondering what she was so astonished by. They didn't just say "oh you put your suit on under your clothes! How smart!" That would have been helpful!
