He's so annoying with his quips that are supposed to be funny but are really lame. I know it's not his fault, it's the awful script.

With the exception of a couple scenes, this movie was boring. Not scary, not engaging, just... meh. And before all you butthurt fanboys tell me to "Go watch Transformers," I would like to say that I love slow-burn, subtle-scare horror. I love Antichrist, Entrance, and The House of the Devil but I can also appreciate mainstream "jump scare" movies like The Woman in Black and The Conjuring.

I liked the movie...
but yeah, his character was rough for the reasons you mention.

I don't know why they had to make him the funny'ish guy.
Cool how he was good with knifes.... but the comedic element just wasn't needed.

They didn't make him the funny guy.
No one was laughing at his jokes.
Don't know why movies should be expected to show characters as being either incredibly witty or humourless, when we prefer a depth and varied spectrum of character otherwise.

Personally though with his death seeming so predictable early on it makes me wonder whether Sarchie's choice to not take vengeance was more out of apathy rather than the change of heart that the dialogue is implying but I'm just not feeling.

Yeah, the script was a complete mess. I came very very close to switching it off about 3/4 through but I persevered. However I was far from impressed when it was over, it was just one of those "meh" movies to me.

Yeah, McHale was terrible. But as the OP said, I blame the script. And director. There was no reason for his character to be the wise cracking side kick. Not with this subject matter. It just didn't work and he came across more smug than funny.

I didn't find him to be that irritating. I liked him better than Bana.
