did pirates actually swim like that to board ships?

Honestly I have no idea, but it seems it's a trademark of Vane's crew--making the vanguard swim over. We see them do this a few times.
"Tact is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip.
It's unlikely - very few sailors could actually swim in those days, let alone swim underwater for any length of time (which they're shown doing). Makes for good TV, though.

Only Vane's Seal Team and Barbossa's cursed crew can do things like that.
Still fun to watch.
thats surprising. one would think one employed in a maritime job should know how to swim.

I think this could have been a good tactic back in those days depending on the circumstances. It HAS to be some-what close quarters, in decent seas, can't expect someone to swim an hour through rough seas and have anything left to fight after boarding.
This would likely be one of the best ways to board, with a little added distraction/confusion. Not over the top swinging from ropes and sht like Tarzan LMAO. Sneak around, recon, find their weak spots, plan plan plan.
It may have been, but must have been much closer than shown in the series.
If you ever swam in the open sea, you will know how hard it is to move forward at all within the motion of the water and how exhausted you will be after a while.
Yea, the distances shown, were kind of ridiculous when I think about it but not a big deal considering how epic the whole thing was. That was a very long swim, these people aren't world class athletes, and probably nalnourished, I doubt many would have even made it.. but enough nitpicking, that sht was awesome!
shareThis wasn't a high seas battle, so I can believe this tactic could be successful.
shareBurt Lancaster did in Crimson Pirate though :) Guess it is from there they got the idea.
shareBut did REAL pirates do that, not Hollywood pirates?
shareNo, I never heard of pirates or anyone else for that matter do anything like that. I seriously doubt that you would have a crew with enough skill to pull something like that off!
shareLOL.
When it was just Vane and his team of dread-locked pirate NINJAs doing that to Ned Low's crew, I was willing to suspend my disbelief for it.
But now an entirely different crew led by Anne Bonny doing that exact same maneuver? Uh, no. Cute, but no.
Lol!!! I COMPLETELY somehow forgot I ever saw that ridiculous movie til you mentioned it.
Whaddya say to that, humble Bellows!
Real pirates sort of snorkeled using hollow reeds. The tough thing was keeping the parrots strapped to their shoulders and teaching the pet birds or their pet spider monkeys to breathe through the reed. It was tough times back then, folks.

I do not know. But in Black Flag I have done that plenty of times.
