Really good opening episode

Epic sea battle leaves you wanting more (you can tell they spent mucho $$ on it)

An embarrassing defeat I enjoyed watching

Billy talking tough to Flint finally

Flint taken down a notch so it'll be fun to see how he gets himself back on top

New reasons to keep Eleanor in the story that could really make things interesting for Rodgers and Blackbeard

A torture scene that made me cringe

And Jack...poor Jack...

reply

I absolutely hated the opening episode. The magic is well and truly gone. I'm so mad that Starz very obviously slashed their budget to a bare minimum for the final season. A series like Black Sails shouldn't go out like this!

Almost every single scene in daylight (and every scene on a ship) was filmed in a studio. Whereas previously we got natural sunlight and a sea breeze which made me fall in love with this show, we now have people standing in front of a green screen in harsh studio lighting. Even something as simple as standing on a beach was done in a studio!

Also, the storyline has become a convoluted mess which desperately needs clarity.

I'm beyond sad when my favourites end in this manner.

Hear, hear! Glad i'm not the only one who's struck by the dichotomy between what should be a straight forward plot [pirates being pirates ----> boarding vessels, plundering, raising hell] and what we're shown instead -----> insufferable protracted 1 on 1 dialogues that go nowhere & mean nothing.

It's not my goddamn planet. Understand, monkey boy?

reply

It's character studies within a historical fiction/prequel to a children's novel. It sounds like you have always hated the plot yet your here bashing the show during its fourth season, kind of petty IMO. The entire show since episode 1 has been building to this point.

...

I believe my work is done here. Thanx for putting it in context far better than I have. Just so we're all on the same page here: you take a children's novel but turn its straightforward plot & themes into a Machiavellian exercise in sturm und drang dialogue?

Yeah, I think the show is a colossal, ridiculous waste of time, patience, effort, $ etc. Why do I watch it & criticize it? Welp, 1st I watch it at gf's house- ain't paying to see it. 2nd, it has the same fascination for me as a classic MST3K episode- so bad it's funny. 3rd, I'm retired, don't have to wake up early manana & fight traffic, bosses, and colleagues so I enjoy staying up late, watch some good movies [Patton] , some cringe-worthy shows [young pope + BS] & comment on IMDb as I've done since 2005. To the best of my knowledge it's still a free country, right, sport?

It's not my goddamn planet. Understand, monkey boy?

reply

Okay whatever any of that means, doesn't change my opinion that you are still petty to come to the board of a show you think is bad to bash it because of a plot that has been the same for 31 episodes yet you find convoluted.

bitchin bro. thats what the plot should be?

No wonder youre bent...not only were you expecting it to be like a childrens book, you NEED it to be.

Storyline is simple if you pay attention

reply

I've been paying attention for three seasons! How else would I be able to detect this disparity?

reply

I don't like that Silver is becoming so big and famous. He's not supposed to be well known except among his crew....

Other than that, it was a very good episode

reply

Just to be pedantic, I do like that its more his myth and legend that is spreading as opposed to his face and directness.

reply

I thought it was awesome, IMO this show is peak TV. So excited for the rest of the season.

reply

Now for some complaints...

Some of the characters are telling us about events that would be great to SEE... Like Billy's lament that his black marks aren't as effective as Rogers' authority, or Rogers' ex-wife's family making things difficult for him.

A lot of the episode follows Silver fighting for his life, when we already know he survives. At least he got to show off his newly sculpted abs, I guess.

Battle was a little too short for me, especially since the scene with the women hiding reminded me of Game of Thrones' Blackwater episode, without the rip-roaring action or Cersei's antics. It's too bad they didn't raid the island, but that might be later.

A mopey, reflective Jack? I miss the spunkier, funnier Jack, but i guess he's growing or something.

reply

I absolutely loved the episode as I love the show overall. Not sure what all the complaining is about. Must be game of throne fans spoiled from super budget production. Love the characters, love the story, love the show.

reply

Or just regular Black Sails fans spoiled from production value of the previous three seasons? Does standing on a beach looking out at the sea really need to be done with green screen?

Is asking for scenes to be shot on location in natural sunlight and breeze such an unreasonable demand these days? I'm begging for breadcrumbs here, people!

reply

I didn't even catch all that. Perhaps there's some bigger scenes late in the season that will be real deal and they had to steal from Peter to pay Paul. Remember black sails unlike other shows and movies doesn't have action figures and t shirts selling like hot cakes to boost the production budget. Starz is putting out phenomenal programming the last few years but are still a bit behind in that category. But what do I know, I just like to watch and really know nothing about some of the things you mentioned. I guess it was an easy catch and I'm sure I will after a second watch.

reply

Yeah, saving money for a big battle somewhere down the line was my first thought as well.

The main appeal of this show for me was always escapism to my very favourite period and place in history (pirates!). And I can't escape there if everything is shot in the studio. I don't care that the keep is suddenly rendered in CG this season. I don't need the azure water, I don't even need the ocean. They could film the scenes next to a pool in a parking lot and it would look more authentic to me than that damned green screen.

reply

This is probably the best premiere yet! How can anyone claim that was boring???

Flint really looked like a fool as much as it pains me to say it. But it appears Mr. Featherstone may be to blame. Curious what happened there. Also... Attacking in broad daylight? I'd expect a nighttime siege. Unfortunate how he's being cast aside. Maybe Flint needs to retire already, get a condo in Florida and hit the golf course. What do you think?

But I have to argue that no pirate would care about Vane's death this much. Risking everything for Vane is absolutely ridiculous. Many pirates were executed. No one would sink their entire fleet for revenge over one hanging! Pirates would simply go on hunting and making a buck for life is short.

I agree... DeGroot torture scene was painful to watch. Who is this new ginger red coat sociopath?

Woodes Rogers seems like he's becoming unglued. I wonder if he got the news that Blackbeard wants Eleanor's head.

Max being forced to pick a team. I think this has been a long time coming. She tries to play every side and then waits to see who wins. Now I'm interested to see what she does and if she can't sit on the fence any longer.

And that poor goat. :(

I wanted him to save the goat but... this isn't Disney, and I knew he couldn't. It was a survival moment for John Silver. There's no place to go with a goat in that situation.

ew 😛

reply

Hmm, I kinda enjoyed Flint looking like a fool. I'm sure he'll have his moment to shine at least once before his tragic end comes.

I think the "new ginger red coat sociopath" is Captain Berringer. Every season has to have a guy we can hate. He's fitting into that role nicely. Hope he lasts longer than Ned Low or Colonel Rhett.

(But did anyone catch what he said when he was doing a Reservoir Dogs on de Groot? He said kids were cutting off the ears of the men captured during Season 3's finale fight.)

RIP the dairy goat

reply

Yes, I caught that. I thought that was the whole point od the revenge thing and why they cut off his ear? Gross scene btw, yuck!

The ginger psycho redcoat Captain Berringer is being played by actor Chris Larkin, real life brother of Toby Stephens. I hope they have at least one scene together.

I really can't get over how terrific Ray Stevenson is as the fierce and imposing 'Blackbeard'. The role just seems to be made for him. I also remember how great he was as 'Pulo' in the Rome series. Wasn't he also The Punisher at one time?

That's very interesting. I didn't know that - thanks for the info. Who the hell is Captain Berringer, btw?

Yes, it's a pity he gets such a small role though. He doesn't do much, does he?

I also remember how great he was as 'Pulo' in the Rome series.

He was great in that. One of the best series ever to be shown on TV, IMO. It's still my top favourite.

Captain Berringer is the sadistic naval officer who cut off De Groot's ear in the premiere episode.

I agree they should feature 'Blackbeard' more and I do hope that he gets his revenge on Eleanor Guthrie as I cannot stand her. I also found it a bit unbelievable that she could have so much power and authority as to manipulate and arrange the hanging of Charles Vane like that. I expect there will be a great cheer from fans of this show when Eleanor gets what's coming to her.

Oh,I got that. I was just wondering if we'd seen him before? I tend to forget minor characters, lol.

HE KILLED THE DAIRY GOAT?!?

reply

LOL. No. That poor goat drowned.

Probably not the same dairy goat violated in Season 2.

reply

I can't believe how stupid Woodes Rogers is. He trades in his nice wife for Eleanor, a viper who killed her last boyfriend out of pure spite and turned the whole island against him. He must have brain damage from his illness to want to tie himself to Eleanor. And she's talking about her family like they love her so much and they'll help her, when she knows perfectly well they despised her father and they want nothing to do with her. She'll probably make a deal with Max to get the money Rogers needs. I wonder if she cares about Rogers other than as a means to an end.

reply

No one seems to care much about the Woodes/Eleanor relationship. Maybe because it's kind of boring and traditional or too normal-looking. The fact that he married her could've been a small bombshell.

And the best part of the drama (him actually deciding to leave his wife or an always-fun-to-watch wedding) only gets talked about and not seen.

I think many guys would fall for that "viper," especially if it looks like Eleanor does.

But here's hoping for a Eleanor/Max reunion, or at least a one-night tryst. Show opened with lesbian porn and it should damn well return to that tradition! :)

reply

Maybe Rogers enjoys a challenge, trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. That's about what marrying Eleanor is like, putting lipstick on a pig and trying to turn it into a lady.

http://thinkingoutloud-descartes.blogspot.com/

reply

LOL. Oh, come on. "Lipstick on a pig"?

Eleanor is sexy. A disgraced daughter from a highborn family? Kinda intriguing. And her sassy-ness can be kinda sexy, too (isn't that what attracted Vane?). And then there's a straight arrow like Rogers getting off on the fact that he's banging the girl who was once attracted to bad ass pirate captains.

Maybe I'm just thinking from a guy's POV. You know we often think with that other organ.
