The Pirate Republic


It was never REALLY a thing, was it?

Just a loose affiliation of famous pirates ("The Flying Gang") hanging out in a lawless land with corrupt governors? I hear the words "republic" and it sounds like a country with laws and a sense of order. And it's mostly one writer (Colin Woodard) who really talks about it and even he doesn't really dwell on the actual republic.

I think he used the word to imply how the idea of freedom spread to US 50 years later. I dind't read the book, but I think it's tenuous. During that period, they were free from government and ruling themselves, even though it was all short lived. Most of these pirates operated for a couple of years before being killed....
