I've noticed that as well. I was talking about it with one of my coworkers not so long ago and she didn't seem to have noticed it. The fact that it always happens on cable TV has become ridiculous to me and predictable; you can literally see the pattern so I don't take the bait whenever a new trailer comes out and just focus on the project as a whole.
Personally, I would chose compelling storytelling over nudity anytime; after all, I'm trying to watch a show/film not porn. In fact, I appreciate nudity when it's well used, filmed, or artistic and compliments the story line (for ex.: Sense8). I don't really like it when it's gratuitous or distasteful (for ex.: Petyr Baelish wiping a wh0re's mouth before introducing her to a new client). To me, it has to be relevant.
I don't recall that many unjustified sex scenes in Black Sails season 1 and 2. I just remember that Max was involved in most of them. Either it was Max luring Eleanor into bed, Anne leaving Jack completely naked and tied to a bed, Max, Anne and Jack threesome, Flint and Miranda awkward sex or Vane trying to conquer Eleanor... all these scenes had their purpose imo.
My only complaints is that Cable TV or Hollywood films rely too much on the female anatomy to sex bait their audience. I don't need to see a penis in 3D or in a bigger plan for the sake of looking at male nudity or to even balance things out, but I would appreciate it if they would treat the characters and actors the same way. It makes sense to see boobs and ass when sex is involved (sometimes they even feel the need to include women's coochies in the shot), but they spare the men with strategic angles shots or use of props to hide some things. I'm sure they don't pressure the male actors the same way they do female actors to agree to nudity in their contract.
Finally, I disagree with you; Black Sails season 3 was lit!!!
