Some women, like men, fight with their bodies, some with their minds, some through clever manipulation, some through brute force, some strategic, some in strict linear ways.
I think this series shows all varieties. As it is loosely anchored in history, the time period we're delving into didn't afford women much direct power. And this is what we're shown for the most part.
I disagree with your assessment that they are cowards. If they had been, they would have ditched Nassau a long time ago when the turf wars continued to persist despite any efforts at stability.
Look at our U.S. Congress--do you think any of those mostly men are brave heroes. No they are sneaky, underhanded, corrupt, indirect SOBs who envelope themselves in power and influence for their own gains and profitable ends. With some notable exceptions, many never stood their ground during real trouble, real conflict. They are, by your definition, total absolute cowards. And in their case, I tend to agree...they are truly cowards. They duck and hide at the first sign of confrontation; they evade direct questions and challenges to their positions.
No...even the women in Black Sails for the most part are not straight up cowards, they are survivors looking for a way to end up still standing after the dust settles from the seemingly endless melees that inundate their world.
