Flint has made Silver bigger than him

Flint is good at tactics and I thought at the beginning that promoting the legend of Silver was a good tactic but now Silver has more alliances and standing than Flint does. Why did Flint allow that? Sure making Silver the main target is sort of smart but Flint does not care about fear and is happy to have the entire empire after him. So I dont totally get it. I think its beyond Flints control now. Flint is respected but Silver is loved. We shall see where it ends.

And in Treasure Island, it stays Flint was terrified of Silver before he died. I just don't see the black sails Flint being scared of anyone. He fought freaking Blackbeard 1v1 for god sakes.

Yeah, I don't particularly like how Flint has been tossed to the side but maybe I'm biased because he's my favorite character.

Which would be worse - to live as a monster, or to die as a good man? 

My thinking is that Flint seeing Silver in love with Madi, reminded him of himself and Miranda. Though he doesn't consider Silver a "friend" as Flint can no longer afford such luxuries, he sees himself as fated to die (the darkness calling him to his doom).

His inability to broker a peace with Billy makes him realize that Silver is his successor as under Silver, everyone can be united. This is something he never was able to achieve, despite wanting to unite all of Nassau, free from British influence.
