Nicky's absence for majority of season 3 and Alex in 2

Does anyone know why Nicky's role was reduced in season 3 and Alex in season 2?

she wanted a better gig and/or money. things didn't work out, so Natasha came back. i don't know about laura. maybe the same.

Okay, I see. Lyonne is definitely getting more money now for being on the show. She's even billed second and it does seems like they writers are trying to make her the other main character now.

I was confused by Nicky's billing too; she was billed as main cast member on season 4 but was hardly in any episodes.
