Dodgy accents

I'm not american so I can't judge this too accurately but from trailers/ clips the two lead actors accents sound pretty bad.Surprisingly bad from Idris considering his work on the wire this just seems lazy. All I can hear is their original accents breaking through and it just put me off the film.

reply

It's not only the accents that are pretty bad. The whole film looks awful.

reply

Very well noticed and also the chase over thew roof tops show the stunt doubles too obviously among other bad things this movie had in it!!

"Your Life is now mine, prepare for your demise!!...Oh!Look a Twinky!!!" BANG! Bang Bang Bang!!

reply

I haven't seen the film, but most American accents attempted by British actors are dodgy. Most over-enunciate their Rs and call it a day. It's painful to listen to. It's especially frustrating in films where the character could just be British without losing anything, but yet an American accent is attempted. That having been said, I have no doubt that British accents attempted by American actors are equally, or perhaps even more, cringe-worthy. So, I suppose turnabout is fair play.

I haven't seen the movie. Do they mention any origins for the characters? I myself grew up in Australia and have lived in the States for a long time and have a pretty dodgy accent of my own. I think more and more people are moving around in their lives. Or it could just be crappy accents from the actors..lol

"God Damn, dipsh!t Rodriguez, gypsy dildo...PUNKS!"

reply

Yes. It's mentioned several times throughout the movie that they are both American.

reply

Being "American" doesn't mean you can't have a dodgy accent. I'm American, a citizen but it doesn't erase my origin.

Idris Elba is apparently from Connecticut, mentions nothing about being English even though he still sounds like Idris Elba lol

Why they couldn't just let him be English I don' know!

Ruined it for me a bit to be honest! Winds me up!!

reply

I just opened a thread about this.

Four of the first 6 credited actors in this film are English playing Americans. I don't really see why at least either Idris or Madden couldn't have just played a Brit.

I don't suppose it mattered too much with Kelly Reilly and Anatole Yusef as their roles were both quite small but I would imagine that they were both cast as they were known to US audiences for their work on True Detective & Boardwalk Empire respectively.

reply

I'm American and their accents weren't distracting at all for me.

reply

Yeah, I was distracted by other things that just made the movie look cheap beyond those the accents. The look of the pickpocket for one thing, he looked more like a frenchman than an American... Which to me was down to how they decided to make him look... Then there was the two handlers of Idris, Anatol Yusef didn't look or sound American, and Kelly Reilly was equally miscast though for her it was probably more of the bad hair/wig which looked anything but American.

Reminded me of how that old show on the BBC Spooks always had the wrong look about the people that were supposed to be Americans in it.

Even overlooking the bad casting the movie was only mildly entertaining. Lots of plot holes.

reply

The other guy was worst. His accent cracked all the time. I'm an American and I found it to be one of the worst American accent I've ever heard.

Don't get hurt kid. I'm not your daddy, I'll beat you senseless.

reply

Top 3 american roles were all played by Brits with crap accents. This was so bad it's laughable, I think the brits are still pissed off about Dick Van Dyke's role from long ago

-only uneducated minds are not open to any ideas other than their own.

reply

Ruined a potentially good movie. The American accents were terrible. Annoyed at the fact that they didnt choose to make both characters Brits instead.
