OT: Just saw Hacksaw Ridge. Best WW2 movie since Saving Private Ryan..

Makes me hope this is the best prohibition movie since Lawless.

What's missing in movies is same as in society: a good sense of work ethic and living up to ideals.

I saw Hacksaw Ridge a week ago and thought the same thing, i'm honestly not sure which i prefer. I think Saving Private Ryan just scraps in as a superior film as it has a little more character development, yet it is a very close call.

I haven't seen Lawless, i'm assuming you would recommend it?

My boy's wicked smart.

Yea Lawless is great. Got a great cast with Hardy, Pearce, Oldman, Chastain, and even Shia LaBouef is decent in it. The violence isn't quite that relentless but it's bloody. Plus the atmosphere and cinematography is beautiful.

Lawless is good. One of Hardys most underrapreciated roles. I think if someone like Scorsese name was on the cover, it would have gotten acclaim. The film probably could have been exactly the same and gotten better reviews if Scorsese had directed it

Tbh, I would hate to see a Scorsese version of lawless. His frantic tempo and ignorance towards small continuity errors would destroy lawless completely. Don't get me wrong, Scorsese is one of the all time greats but his take on lawless would be an entirely different film.

I saw hacksaw too, but when you say best since SPR you completely over look Fury.

reply

Really? Fury is probably the worst war film I've ever seen. Even Windtalkers is halfway decent in comparison in that it doesn't take itself so seriously.

It shamelessly glorifies war, it's as unrealistic as they come (hell, man of steel is more believable), and is just all around very poor in a lot of regards. It's a shame because there are good parts about it. Lerman, Pitt, and LaBeouf are great. Bernthal and Peña give the worst performances of their respective careers. Was Bernthal given any direction at all? He's like watching a chicken with its head chopped off, trying to make sense of everything at once. Michael Peña's character is paper-thin and only seems to exist so they can throw in some racial slurs for good measure.

It's beautifully crafted but piss poor where it matters.

Either way, Letters From Iwo Jima is a far superior film than SPR and Fury combined. All opinions of course...

I liked Fury, but would not list it as one of the best war movies. Saving Private Ryan is Iconic, and thus probably still hold the Altima greatest war movie title, For me anyway. Hacksaw Ridge was one of the best movie theatre experiences I've ever had though. Incredible film and likely to be on that best all time war movies list soon though.
