Had a feeling its hopes were in the Tech categories.

Ever since I saw the trailer, combined with Affleck stating he went for a period piece with modern sensibilities, it looks like the clash of eras will lead it to receive some mixed reviews. But I have heard Chris Messina is fantastic in the film, so if anyone has a long shot at an Oscar nomination, it's probably him. I'm guessing Best Picture, Director, and Adapted Screenplay are out for sure. It's a very competitive year anyhow. But it still does look good. Like someone else said, the Gangster Squad quip is sketchy. So hopefully it's more like Lawless, which I thought was really good and underrated! GS, on the other hand, is crap.

When was it compared to Gangster Squad? Only one site has said that the reviews are mixed whilst others are reporting that critics love it. The official release date is in January yet the embargo lifts four days prior to the select advance screenings, that are mostly for the media anyway. That is a bold, confident embargo.

My boy's wicked smart.

Disregard the Gangster Squad comment. I just realized that was one dude's agenda, haha.

I'm ascertaining this from Variety's Kris Tapley's summation of expectations so far, Affleck himself saying he didn't make this for BP, and Tapley suggesting WB is focusing on crafts for awards. Tapley is one of the sharpest Oscar predictors. He's not 100% perfect, but I trust his judgment here.

However, I haven't exactly excluded the possibility that this could be a The Wolf of Wall Street-like situation. Or, uh, any *beep* December Eastwood movie release. Except Gran Torino. Because vomit.

FYC: Brie Larson FTW.

yes i've seen people making out assumptions that this movie's bad cause affleck said he didn't make it for oscars, frankly only one of his film was nominated for oscar while other 2 were not and both of them were exceptional and other is embargo thing, ok it's just lifting 4 days before limited release but still 20 days before actual release. Of course it has every chance of sucking but it's not *beep* until it's *beep*

I don't seem to undersrand the complaints about the embargo. 20 days prior to commercial release, that is a very confident embargo. Especially for Warner Brothers!!

That's what I think too. The Town and Gone Baby Gone were not nominated for categories like Best Picture or Director, that doesn't mean the films were not good. There are a lot of these kind of films which are great but never nominated. Take Denis Villeneuve's Prisoners and Sicario, they weren't nominated for Best pic or director either, but both are solid films.

I don't judge a film by whether it's Oscar nominated or not. I'm still looking forward to Live by Night, whether nominated or not.

Yea if this is as good as Lawless, I'm in.

The villainy you teach me I will execute-and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction.

Affleck himself said that it isn't an awards contender type movie like Argo/The Town and it's much more of genre film that will be a crowd pleaser.

Doesn't really bother me at all since it still looks great, but I also think it means that it will be without a doubt probably the weakest of his directional efforts yet. Since they decided to give it a limited release a month after announcing it's official release, it defiantly seems like they are going for awards in the technical categories.
