It should have failed when Affleck put himself as the lead. There is no way you read that book and think Affleck at this point in time should be playing Joe. That is like having Reese Witherspoon playing Nancy Drew. All wrong.

The way Affleck contrived the original text in order to play Joe is the very definition of vanity project.
