I got the sense, for a minute, that Dion had killed Loretta under orders from the Italian mob boss. Chris Messina played it as though he was overcompensating when explaining to Affleck's character that she had committed suicide. Was surprised when that (seemingly) turned out not to be the case. Is it different in the book?

BTW, enjoyed the movie as a whole but the scenes with RD (Klansman) and the Elle Fanning diner scene were both superb.

No, it's the same in the book. She commited suicide by cutting her own windpipe in her father's bed. The book actually gives some more gross, graphic details of her suicide. But the movie is true to the book. Dion had nothing to do with it. In the book I actually think it's Miguel's character who tells Joe, not Dion.
