The postcard?

From reading around these threads, I haven't found a definitive answer, so I'm gonna put out the first thing I thought of and see what everyone thinks.

When I saw the postcard land through the door at the end, I thought that he sent it knowing it would take a few days to arrive so he could seem to have been in a different place during the murder if there was ever an investigation. I may have missed a few details, and I want to watch the movie again...but yea... That's what I got.

reply

that doesn't make sense, so, no.

reply

How does it not?

reply

Yes. I am pretty sure that is why he did the postcard, knowing himself it will take a few days to arrive after his killing spree. Giving him an Alibi if like you said it gets investigated.

reply

Thank you lol. That other guy just said NO with no explanation. Thats all I could think of. I figure thats why he brought it up earlier in the movie to make sure it hadn't arrived yet. And thats why he didn't really respond when she kinda spoke down at him about them taking a few days to arrive. Obviously it didn't matter in the end if we are to assume he died.

reply

I don't think so, because when he first got to his sisters house he ask if she had got it. She informed him that they take more time. He didn't seem to know, and from the rest of the movie I would also argue he wasn't really worried about an alibi. From the first murder he told the kid in the limo that he hurt wade, and told him why. he expected for them to call the police, and even offered to turn himself in.

reply

Well I just don't know! :D

reply

I think his conversation with his sister pretty much voided out that theory. Clearly he has been homeless for a long time and he even had to ask his sister if it made it. To not know the timeline for a regular mail delivery would imply that he probably could not plan a scheme around that idea. Not to mention a postcard would not give you a credible alibi.

reply

Anyone of you actually have been able to read it ? Camera angle was difficult to understand any sentence, just saw clearly "Dear Sam", maybe second watching i will see..

reply

he sent the postcard just in case he'd get killed. i don't think he intends to use the postcard as an alibi. it is shown in the movie that he doesn't care what happens to him, jail or dead. just as long as his sister is safe.

How come signatures aren't cursive anymore

Everybody in this thread has failed to remember he asks Sam in the diner if she knows, THEN and only THEN does he realise the Cleland's have not called the police, which then leads to the realisation Sam and the children are in danger.

This completely debunks the theory the postcard was posted to give the impression he was in a different area at the time because he wrote that and posted it before he arrived at Sam's and fully expected the murder of Wade Cleland, Jr to be all over the news by the time he arrived (which was two days later).

I'm trying to read it but his hand is it the way! The words I can make out are :
Dear Sam,
I have been at the
shore this whole time. I
thought it was _______
have been _________
books _____________
and th_________
Please ___________
for what ___________
He has written the last two lines already, and is filling in the space in between, which could suggest the last two lines are the important ones. I'm guessing it says :
Please forgive me
for what I've done.
