I think by that time his priorities had changed. He knew he was not going to get out of this alive, so he didn't want to drag his friend down with him.

You only say that because you watched the movie and know the protagonist dies, and you're thinking, "a second gunman added to this exact scenario would save Dwight's life."

Think about what Dwight knew as he left his friend's house, and the potential fallout of his attack on the family. He seems ready to die, yet he can't be certain he will. On the other hand, if he involved his friend, both might die.
