A Sequel? Really?
Wasn't everything already wrapped up with no loose plot threads in the first?
Where could they possibly go from there?!

rio had critical acclaim and made $484,635,760 worldwide
shareRIO jump-started an entirely new franchise for Blue Sky Studios and FOX (other than Ice Age).
Critics were pretty positive at it, not to mention the wide array of audiences that made the movie profitable.
As for "where could they possibly go from there?" Well, we've only explored the basics of what Rio de Janiero, Brazil is like, but it did NOT explore further on their sporting events. The first movie foreshadowed the happenings of a second movie and that would be the scene where the people of Brazil were watching a soccer competition (while Blu and Jewel were escaping from Nigel) which inevitably is ruined due to a citywide power outage.
But the first movie was good enough! Needless sequels for the sole purpose of money is just pointless and takes away from the stand-alone original!

Don't underestimate Blue Sky Studios though. They may have made pointless sequels to ICE AGE, but let's see how they handle their new franchise RIO.
There were very few things unexplained in the first film, like unexplored parts of Brazil as well as a little more character development in some of the existing characters we've come to know already.
It does take away from the stand-alone original (Pixar already made that costly mistake for Cars 2), but hopefully Blue Sky and FOX come up with a legit story that can measure up to what the original RIO was like.
I'm sure new songs will be definitely added as well as new characters and places of RIO not shown yet. Perhaps, the team can use the plausible raw footage of Rio de Janiero they used as reference. I did catch glimpses of their travels during their research for the first movie online and not ALL were used/shown in the final cut.
On this page is says that one of Blu and Jewel's chicks is afraid to fly. Really? They are using a plot point from the first film again in this one? Is that the style these days? The Hangover did it, so why not, right?
By Grabthar's Hammer...what a savings.
silverwolf_316.
Actually, one of the chicks is anxious and struggling to fly perfectly, not really afraid or hesitant like her father Blu when he tried flying for the first time with Jewel. There's a difference here.
According to early storyboard sketches I have caught a glimpse of for this upcoming sequel, Blu and Jewel's 3 chicks play an important role on the opening scene. It shows that the 2 male chicks are able to fly without difficulty, but the 1 female chick is observing them and trying to lift off the ground like her siblings, but is unable to do so properly.
THAT is only the small teaser of what's to expect for RIO 2.
The first movie was unfunny and cliche. Doesn't deserve to get a sequel.
shareCliche, yes. And yeah, not that funny. But you're completely wrong on it not deserving a sequel.
It now depends on the sequel's plot, not to mention with actress Anne Hathaway (Jewel) now running for the Oscars as a nominee, that might influence the crew to work it toward an advantage.
As a parent watching it with kids, it was unwatchable for me.
WTF?
