It Doesn't Live Up To The First One
The scenery is beautiful, but that was about it. The plot was asinine.

shareThe first one was pretty awful so this one doesn't have a lot to live up to. And it doesn't.
Ok, what about the sequel didn't you like about it? And don't bring up plot because the 1st ones was never good to begin with, and I'm sure most people didn't watch the 1st one for its cliched romance story. This is coming from someone who liked both films.
share1st one got very positive reviews esp compared to #2

Well, I liked this better than the first one...and definitely better than Free Birds.
Both Rios are cute, simple, cliche-filled, largely predictable little stories...but they're enjoyable thanks to the humor and overall likability of most characters. I'm very turned off by reliance on "hipness," pop-culture references, and endless pop-star voice casting--but I didn't think the second one was TOO heavy on that stuff. It was funny, and started to get quite good as soon as Gabby went into musical mode.
My favorite thing about it, by far, was the Nigel/Gabby/Charlie scenes. I kept waiting for those. Poor, poor Charlie. The "Poisonous Love" (heh, "Toxic Love," anyone?) and "I Will Survive" scenes were the absolute best. I LOVE Gabby. (Or Gabi, as they spelled it here.) Dart frogs--even a non-poisonous pseudodendrobate like her--have always been among my favorite animals. Their colors and patterns are amazing, like tropical fishes. And she was just the greatest, most unique and memorable character. (She grew up thinking she couldn't touch anyone or she'd kill them? She's kind of Elsa's amphibious counterpart. xD) Kristin Chenoweth was the PERFECT voice for her.
Blu's and Jewel's kids weren't particularly annoying...a little stereotypical, maybe (the know-it-all nerdy genius, the troublemaking daredevil, and...the plump one.)
The other thing I loved about it, aside from the great animation (like Pixar, they've gotten super-realistic with all animals except humans!), is the representation of all kinds of awesome wildlife. It's like a who's-who of my "First Discovery Book: The Rain Forest." The roseate spoonbills, pink river dolphins, scarlet macaws, green tree boa, tapir, capybara, anteater, sloth, piranhas, all the plants of the rainforest, etc...spotting them all was certainly fun.
Oh, and the great references--Cats, Flashdance, Shakespeare...loved those too!
Of course there was the whole FernGully thing with having to save the rainforest from evil people who mark trees with the X of doom, and the "Homeward Bound 2"-esque disagreements between a "pet" who loved the domestic life and animals who believe that humans are to be avoided at all costs. So original, it is not at all. But watchable? Yes, that it is. Mostly thanks to Gabi. x3
For that matter, I do agree. I loved the first one — but I think being in love with magical Rio de Janeiro and Brazilian folks has to do with it, I think the film did capture the essence of the city IMHO — and when this one started, I had reservations about ANOTHER dance number and oh, look ! We've got kids ! But M. Saldanha's generosity won me over again. Now if he could find a screenwriter worth his skill…
shareI agree.
This movie was plain boring. I think i fell asleep during it for at least five times.
