The scene with the prostitutes!

Midway through Mississippi Grind, hopeless gamblers Gerry (Ben Mendelsohn) and Curtis (Ryan Reynolds) end up visiting a pair of prostitutes: Simone (Sienna Miller), whom Curtis is enamored with, and Vanessa (Analeigh Tipton), an awkward, shy creature. While Curtis and Simone are off in another room, Vanessa performs an amateur magic trick for Gerry, producing a kitten in the process. She then urges Gerry to show her a talent of his, which he does by playing a simple, sad tune on a piano. Directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck frame all of this magnificently, bringing the camera into an intimate place, while Gerry and Vanessa sit on the piano bench, their faces inches away from each other. “I have a little girl,” Gerry says suddenly and sadly, revealing that his daughter lives with his ex-wife and that he doesn’t see her any more. Then he quickly adds, as if by way of explanation, “I have problems with money.” Up until this scene, Gerry is always hustling, always assuring others he has the situation under control. Mendelsohn lets his guard down now, showing that this character knows how hopeless he is. “Did I say anything about money?” Vanessa asks, Tipton delivering the line to perfection, sounding both amused and slightly insulted — she likes Gerry, and even though she’s a sex worker, she wasn’t even considering charging him for this time together. “No, it’s not like that,” Gerry says, slowly and quickly at the same time. “It’s just something I wanted to tell you.” “I’m going to do something else with my life,” Vanessa responds, meaning that she has plans to be more than just a low-rent hooker. “It’s just something I wanted to tell you.” Mendelsohn and Tipton smile at each other after this exchange, and both actors possess such delicate, touching smiles that your heart aches — this is acting at its very finest, and filmmakers Boden and Fleck are wise enough to let the actors do all the heavy lifting here.
