why the title?

for people who have seen this film why is it called Frances Ha

reply

When she inserts her name in the mailbox, she has to break off a piece of her name to fit. She's compromising herself, giving up a piece of herself for adulthood, but she's learned to have a sense of humor about it.

Her character's last name is something like "Hallaway" before she truncates it to fit the mailbox. During the entire film Frances is bounced around from one place to live to another. None of them really her own. This reflects on her unstabled life and reliance on others to take care of her. At the end of the film she finally has her own job and, more importantly, her own apartment. By putting her truncated name on the mailbox, she's saying that she if finally become self-reliant and focused, i.e. an adult.

she could have gone f.HALLAWAY

She also said at one point (I think about the dance she choreographed) that she liked things that looked like they were a mistake.

It gives the movie hipster cred

Because Frances is QUIRKY...she's just so lovably, gosh-darn quirky and adorable! If you see this movie, you'll be "reminded" of that constantly.

The thing is, I've known a "Frances Ha" or 3 in my so-called life and while they are cute and/or charming, they are not that nice or reliable. I was friends with one that was so busy pursuing her Artistic Ambitions she couldn't be bothered with anything so tedious and mundane as a "job" - so she took advantage of me and mutual friends while getting "help" from her (wealthy) family.

reply

Yes, that's part of the movie.
