Greta Gerwig is a terrific actress, but . . .

this film is just an arguably clumsy Woody Allen rip off made from a slightly embarrassing, insulated perspective of rich kid oblivion. I was engaged by her acting and by some of the inside jokes, but it didnt' work for me in the end. I certainly disagree with the critical consensus that this is some terrific "French New Wave" homage. I remember having thought highly of Squid and the Whale, Margot at the Wedding, and Greenberg, but now I'm beginning to think that they were just really well acted and really well disguised pretentious journal entries. It makes the pessimist in me want to re-evaluate those films. It's a living embodiment (minus the knowing self deprecation) of a joke from a Woody Allen film; something along the lines of being a film maker who films in black and white because he is a pretentious ass that wants to feign to be an "Artist" (funnily enough that film, "The Artist", was the even more offensively well received butt of the same joke)

I don't mean to sound like I hate the film, but I mean . . . really? If it wasn't filmed in black and white the Rotten Tomatoes score would be 65% instead of 90+.

And if The Godfather didn't have Marlon Brando it wouldn't be a classic. Your point?

You really think Brando's performance is the reason Godfather is a classic? Pacino's is better really.
