I saw the trailer for Frances Ha in theatres the other day, and the first thing that came to mind was the works of Andrew Bujalski and Funny Ha Ha in particular. It just struck me as a Hollywood knockoff of the mumblecore movement that happened 10 years ago, which is typical for Baumbach I think.
I just saw Frances Ha yesterday, and I've seen Funny Ha Ha a few times. I like both of them but I don't think they're that much alike. Definitely not a similar plot at all. However, I do think that Greta Gerwig's speaking voice is very similar to Kate Dollenmayer's.
I thought of Funny Haha when I saw the title. I think its obvious what genre the movie is, nor do I think its a knock off. Baumbach isnt hollywood, he doesnt typically make big budget 100 million dollar films, and this movie is no different. Greta has been associated with mumblecore for years. The film isnt filled with big stars. Everyone associated with it is associated with mumblecore. Adam Driver for instance. The fact that Greta and Baumbach co wrote is only enhances this aspect. The "real" mumblecore films you seem to suggest that are authentic, alot of them starred Greta. So I dont really see the issue here. I dont see Baumbach as cashing in on a trend, and plus you really think if that was the case, that Greta would not only star in this film, but help cowrite it, and then be dating the director. I dont get the sense Greta puts up with inauthenticity.
Plus, Greta's friends with all those guys. Bujalski and everyone else, Duplass Bros, etc... I dont get the sense any of them are pissed off she made this movie, nor do I see it as a middle finger to any of them.
In many ways these movies are all fitting together, seamlessly. Funny Haha, Mutual Appreciation, Baghead, The Puffy Chair, they all are fantastic films
Out of these i didnt like pufy chair so much, and i really disliked frances ha. it felt much more like a ppoor man's woody allen than a mumblecore flick. just no insight or intrigue for me.
