Most likely she couldn't afford that place

with her secretarial job (not at a major dance company) and teaching ballet choreography at the side.

This and Nick & Norah's Playlist - easy parking and barely any cars n a weekend in Manhattan?! - portray a very unrealistic reality of the island.

You missed the part where she won the lottery, have half to OxFam, and used the other half to get that wonderful, pre-war, three bedroom apartment in Washington Heights.

Not sure how you missed it, that was the only scene shot in full color.

Where's that scene ?!

It's based in Brooklyn not on the island

The last address given for her is in Washington Heights, which is in Manhattan -- and even tho that n'hood is affordable by Manhattan standards, it's very expensive. I have friends who live there, and I know (from their rent, and from googling current and past rental listings) that you can't find a 1 BR in WH for less than 1500K (1700 or up is more likely), and a landlord won't rent to you if your annual salary isn't at least 30 times the monthly rent (40 or more is preferred, but in big cities with insane rents, landlords will allow 30) -- and a clerical job at a barely-meeting-expenses / not-well-known dance company doesn't pay 45K.

Just one more annoying dip into fantasyland in a movie that purports to show, among other things, the challenges (for artsy 20-somethings) of making a life in the NYC metro area. Just one more thing that made the ending of this otherwise-OK movie *intolerable*.
