Everyone knows a 'Sophie'.

In the beginning she seemed like the "normal" one out of her and Frances, the "has her *beep* together" friend. Everyone has a friend like Sophie, the over-achieving and "above it all" one of the group. That friend is always the one who, in the end, ends like up like Sophie in this movie.....realizing their ideals are too much to live up to.

She left for Tokyo, with complete disregard for Frances's feelings...acting like she was "moving on" and "growing up" (the blog thing was gross but hilarious lol)....only to hate it and returning to Frances's bed, where we saw her true colors. She was ultimately the less mature and grown up of the two. Did anyone else feel this way?

I guess what I'm trying to say is....I hated Sophie and loved Frances.

thank you for that forensic analysis. it was what i was really trying to say, just not as good of a writer as you....obviously. but still, there was insensitiveness on sophie's part. that's one of the hallmarks of relationships/friendships though, some things are just too hard to say at the right time.

Some wander the wilderness, some drink cosmopolitans.

Hey there -- I've known me some 'Frances Ha's in my younger days. While they were frequently fun to be around, they were often flaky/unreliable and thought making a living/paying rent was somewhat "beneath them," generally because they came from somewhat well-to-do families and/or mooched off of people. They also tended to be the kind of people that often complained about being "broke" yet always seem to have $ for cancer sticks, booze, drugs, and/or tattoos.

And wasting your time and money seeing movies and posting comments makes you better how? Why do you need to rely on people? Just take them as they are and adapt. Don't expect them to be like you.

Great point there, Shemp! Can't afford an apartment but she sure could afford cigarettes and booze, including the most expensive bottle of vodka the bar had.

Sophie did realize that reality wasn't as good as fantasy, but she was, no doubt, more mature and less aimless than Frances. They both were arrogant & naive in different ways.

Hm. Now that is provocative. I would agree they were obviously different people despite their closeness through the earlier parts of the film. And both naive in different ways. But arrogant? I am far from in agreement that the film went there.

Even Sophie's undermining the friendship did not strike me as arrogant.

I don't see the arrogance.

Thinking you're better than someone else for any reason is arrogant and many who see this film make all kinds of pretentious assumptions. Like saying that frances was getting money from her parents. The only scene that addresses her mom says they can't help her with the debt from her Paris trip and she turns down help. Somebody said she can't afford living in an apartment with a wooded view in Brooklyn. It wasn't wooded. It was a back yard with trees and you could see other houses behind her. It is a movie told in fragments and people go look at fragments and see what they want.

The two were pretty much the same except that one latched onto a guy with money and the other didn't.

This movie couldve been great, but it was just meh. Frances was all over the place (Why did she leave that great apartment with the 2 guys?) and the movie never really took root for me.

She left the apartment with the two guys because she couldn't afford rent. She wasn't used in the Christmas show, which is when she was counting on getting enough money to not only pay, but pay $1,200 instead of $950. So, instead, she went home to her family for Christmas and just never returned.
