Why did he sound like a American southerner?

Was he American?

I missed it if this was explained.

Nah, he was clearly Australian.

He's not clearly Australian...he has absolutely no Australian accent at all and has a distinct US southern accent.

Yes, he and his brother are Americans who went to Australia to look for job in the mines, hec the Southern dialect.

Does this mean that in this post-apocalyptic world they flew 20 hours to Australia for work? Or they were already there working when whatever happened happened?

Henry his brother also has an accent, though not quite as strong as Rey's.🐭
