Everything but the Plot
This is one of the most odd experiences I've ever had watching a film. The acting is solid and even the fairly simple script works well. The setting and the photography is beautifully done. Everything is paced, absolutely brilliantly (rare today). There is not a single useless scene thrown in for filler, but there is one huge, gaping problem. The Plot. I'm not talking about the post-apocalyptic set or the brother angle. Even the "buddy" aspect I can get behind. It's the reason why all this is happening that drove me bananas. While I thought the ending was actually going to be sillier and knew the gist for the reason from the title and two earlier scenes, it just failed to pay off the way it had hoped. I know the films it will be compared to, but I found it very similar to a certain Don Johnson film from the early 70's. Not in plot, but in motivation. This is not a bad film, but the reasons for everything needed a little tweaking. The director sure has a way of setting a mood though. This and Animal Kingdom are shower inducing. Might have to give this a few months and check it out again.
