Was the dog already dead, or alive in the car when it was taken?
I assumed was already dead (I hope so, anyway) and he was on his way to bury it when the car was stolen.
The Rover: The violence seems futile, but it is not pointless.
Of course the dog was dead. Why the heck would he leave it in the trunk of the car if it was alive?
shareBoom65:
Wasn't the car stolen?
I'm also not assuming there's no access between the car interior and the boot.
No, it was Eric's car to begin with...but then the theives stole it.

Fear the man with nothing left to lose.
tracygee;
So you mean "yes" then - the car was stolen.
Which explains why the car was important and his interest in the doctors dogs
I was surprised the crooks who stole it didn't smell a dead dog in the boot.
Or even check if there was anything in the boot to steal.
They had the car for a few days.
But I liked the reason why Guy was so determined to retrieve his car, so he could bury his dog.
It's the harbour towns that the grey metal ships call home.
Or even check if there was anything in the boot to steal.
No-one has answered the original (unanswerable?) question.
I'm not so sure we're meant to assume the dog was already dead.
I think it's obvious the dog was already dead. Why should he be in the trunk if not dead? He loved dogs. The film starts with the profile of Eric, staring into the nothing, silent, rather sad.. before he opens the door of the car.
The final scene starts with the profile of Eric, staring into the nothing, silent, rather sad.. before he opens the door of the car in order to burry his dog. That was his plan from the start of the film but the thieves disrupted it.
Yes, the dog was dead. Eric (Guy Pearce's character) was on his way to bury the dog. He stopped to have a stiff drink because burying your only friend in the post-apocalypse sucks. His car got stolen and this served as the initiating event for everything that followed.
shareYeah I agree, which is also why there are flies shown in the movies opening scene where Guy Pierce is sitting in his car. The dog was dead in the trunk the whole time...
shareYeah... I'm assuming that's pretty much why he had a shovel in the trunk as well.
"Ain't life grand!"
