Most of the movie is devoid of much music (certainly of actual songs), and then suddenly 75 minutes into it this 'don't hate me 'cause I'm beautiful' song is played over the action, seemingly to no purpose. Was it a plug? Like a placement ad for the song? It completely took me out of the movie. In fact I've paused it just to come post this, it was so jarring.

I was literally so taken aback by the music that for a time I thought maybe I had left open youtube or my player on the computer and that started playing (even though I don't own this track). It bothered me less after it's revealed that Rey is listening to the radio but still... very out of place.

Totally thought someone had hijacked the feed and was playing something else. My wife was in the other room, knew what kind of movie I was watching and actually came in to see if it was the same film. I said "I have no idea what's going on."

Completely agree with the OP. I understand that it's supposed to be a joke, but that doesn't make the scene play any better. That song does not belong in this movie no matter what the reason. And it's a stupid joke anyway.
shareI think Michod said it was supposed to be jarring, a representation of the world that was to illustrate that someone like Rey was actually just a kid who would be singing along to a pop song in a different reality. They initially had chosen another pop song but went with this one as an 'inside' joke. Either way, the scene would have had a similar pop song.
