Jackie Kennedy's hat and a bunch of flowers? WHAT???????????

This film was meant to be accurate?

So why when they wheeled JFK into the hospital did he have on his stomach his wife's hat and a bunch of flowers between the legs?

reply

Well, blood is naturally sticky so...why couldn't it be possible?

The flowers I imagine is suppose to be visually poetic. What irritated myself was why they took the time to be true to how Clint Hill covered Kennedy's face with his jacket....only to then take it off him 5 seconds later. The jacket was kept over his head until the trauma room.

A recent interview with one of the trauma room nurses said she grabbed the flowers to discard them and inadvertently threw out Jackie's pillbox. From that account, it sounded like they were all a bloody and unrecognizable mess. I didn't get the impression that the hat was sitting pristinely on the President.

This part is not accurate. The flowers were left on the floor in the limo (there are photos of this) and the hat was given back to Jackie later by one of the Secret Service men after he wiped a glob of brain tissue off of it.

From the October 13, 2013 Fort Worth Star-Telegram:

Margaret Hinchliffe will never forget Nov. 22, 1963.

A nurse at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas that day, she hurried to help when word came that two gunshot victims were about to arrive.

****

“I saw this man on the cart, blood on him, flowers … near his head,” said Hinchliffe, now 82. “I picked those up and threw them in the trash.”

****

Some time later, Hinchliffe said, she learned that she had thrown away the pink pillbox hat that Jacqueline Kennedy wore that day. It was with the flowers she removed from the president’s stretcher when he was wheeled into the hospital.

I've seen a photo of the empty, presidential limo with the roses scattered on the floor of the backseat. Why would Jackie carry a bouquet into the hospital after her husband just got blasted in the head?? That would be the last thing she would be thinking of!

reply

i believe that the picture is of LBJ's limo you refer to.

The flowers you are referring to are those belonging to Nellie Connally. She received yellow roses and sat in the jump seats along with her husband John who was also shot just in front of the President.

The pillbox hat is lost to history. It is unknown what happened to it.

reply

yeh, that ^ . I knew it was someone elses flowers.

You're anticipating entirely reasonable behavior from a lady whose husband head became "red mist" minutes earlier? I think the scene were Jackie gives the nurse a handful of JFK's skull and brain that Jackie had been holding onto reflects her mental state at the time.
