MAJOR SPOILER did that guy love jasmine

do you think that potential fiancé really loved jasmine? To break up with her for that seemed petty

Yes she lied but anyone could see she lied because she was embarrassed and the facts remain her hubby was dead and she had no kids so what

I think he did love her and could have forgiven her, if she hadn't overreacted as she did. But it was what she always did - with the dentist, at Ginger's. She could not keep her cool and stand her ground.

reply

No, he didn't love her. He was obviously on the lookout for a suitable partner because he had political aspirations. Someone who was photogenic, stylish, well-traveled, and involved in an upper-class career was the kind of woman who fit the bill. He may have liked her style and her qualities, but I think he told her he loved her and said things she wanted to hear because she was the "perfect candidate" for his requirements.

It seemed like they dated for three days before he was proposing marriage. That's not enough time for love to develop. He was evaluating her on the most superficial level.

This was obvious after the confrontation with Augie. A political wife can have no scandal attached to her name; the opposing parties would have a field day with it. After Augie revealed the skeletons in Jasmine's closet, it was painfully obvious that marrying her was out of the question for Dwight.

^^^This. Completely agree btw.

If your male boss came onto you like the dentist did, would you not fight him off. And yes, I am assuming you are male. But even if you were female.

reply

No, I am female, as was Jasmine. It's sad she was so traumatised she could not legitimately put the fear of God into that creepy dentist and keep her job.

reply

SO if your boss tried to kiss you and touch you inappropriately, you would not quit, but "put fear" into him and stay at the job still? Seriously? For minimum wage, you would allow that guy to get away with doing that to you by just yelling at him and staying at the job? She did exactly what she should have, punched the guy and quit the job.

reply

Yes, exactly - I would not lose my source of income because of my boss's inappropriate or offensive behaviour, unless I thought the situation was dangerous. And believe me, more than yelling would be involved - there would be threats of prosecution.

reply

I would never stay at a job like that just to make a buck. Even with retaliation, why would I serve that scum as a receptionist? She did the right thing. Chose self respect over money. Nothing wrong with that.

Good luck with that. Although Jasmine didn't realise it, she was desperate - flat broke, unqualified, unskilled, no job history and no connections.

reply

To break up with someone because they have lied to you about anything and everything, for self-serving reasons, is hardly "petty".

reply

Nope. I don't think he had really fell in love with her. Infatuation, perhaps. Mesmerized, perhaps. But mostly, his interest was mostly piqued because she fit the mold he was looking for. I personally feel he could have been closeted gay (his interest in fashion, his refinement, delicate nature, etc) but mostly because of how he had everything planned out to the last detail on where they would live, what their house would look like, etc, etc. It's as if he had been thinking about and planning this for a long time. You can't have a serious political career and be gay, or at least it makes it much more difficult. He needed the perfect beard to play the part. enter Jasmine.

I think you kind of proved both my points with the McGreevey reference. He had been married twice, fathered children and yet he described himself as a "gay American," not bisexual. And yes, he did have a serious political career while he was closeted. After his announcement, political career over.

My suspicion about Dwight doesn't have anything to do with the basic plot. It's just my own personal assessment based on the limited information we were given. Does it make a difference? Absolutely not. However I do think it makes him a little more interesting rather than the plastic, sterile character we were shown.

On the surface, perhaps, but truthfully Dwight was just as materialistic as Jasmine. And we all know politicians are often less than honorable and will do anything to win. So, I'm not so sure I want to bank on him as being the knight in shining armour here.

I think she was more of what he was looking for rather than whether he loved her.

Its that man again!!

reply

I think he was in love with who she was; a society woman. As she said, he was the kind of man who simply needed the right woman to take care of him and be presentable.

Dwight was right. This wasn't just some white lie. She lied about her job, her past husband, and IMO worst of all, about have a son. HAVING A SON! What kind of woman would lie about having a son? One you can't trust and postponing the marriage proposal was smart, especially, if there was no prenup.
