A Streetcar Named Desire-inspiration?

I was struck by the similarities of the two films. Two sisters, one pretentious, fallen on hard times and now with mental illness who comes to stay with one married to a thuggish lower-class brute, etc who she sees has redeeming qualities and whom she actually loves. I thought Cate was brilliant and very reminiscent of the beautiful and awesomely talented Vivien Leigh, who also won the Oscar for her portrayal. I kept waiting for the 'kindness of strangers' line at the end.

I've only seen the trailer, but I came here to see if it was a remake. What I saw looked very similar.

Woody Allen borrowed heavily from A Streetcar Named Desire. Chili wasn't a brute though. He was just a little rough around the edges.

Exactly. I have wondered the same thing since the movie was released. I'm amazed film critics didnt point out it then and that Woody Allen didnt even mention a word about it. I mean, he was nominated for an Original Screenplay Academy Award!
I love the movie and the actresses performances though.

I also noticed some similarities to Cassavettes' A Woman Under The Influence.

reply

Yeah. I'm pretty sure Allen said somewhere that he was inspired by Streetcar
