I don't understand all the accolades this movie got.
It's not a bad movie at all. But 94% on Rotten Tomatoes? A Prix de l'Avenir d'Un Certain Regard prize at the Cannes?
This was a pretty good film at best, but not an all-time great one. Coogler did a great job for a first-time director. Michael B. Jordan clearly has a lot of potential. Jordan was great in Creed, and one of the few bright spots in the latest Fantastic Four movie.
The film did seem emotionally manipulative at times. For me, the worst was Oscar Grant supposedly dumping the weed he sells into the ocean and randomly picking that day to change, because of those nonsensical BS the American media today spoonfeeds the public every time there is a police shooting regarding a black man who supposedly was "just getting his life together."
The actual events behind the film were tragic and Coogler did a great job showing how a life could be tragically cut short so quickly even in an accident. I think they should have shown more of the police officer who accidentally killed Oscar Grant, not necessarily to give him sympathy; but because so little screentime provided to him makes him out to be some "evil" guy. From what I have read, he was some rookie idiot who had no business even being a cop.
I'm neither black nor white, but I think white liberal guilt was behind a lot of the praise for the film. Overall, I liked the film for its high production values and good acting, but the story was lacking.
