Apparently the Soviets are just too dangerous to ignore or provoke when mini-nukes are going off near or on Japan, lol. Cameras existed back then so there is no way America could've ignored this incident let alone not assign a task force to oversee these incidents of unknown attacks happening around there. MacArthur definitely wouldn't let this slide either seeing how he was specifically assigned to oversee the rebuilding of Japan.

It was another nod to Jaws. Just like when the Hopper asked if the Coast Guard was notified regarding the shark attacks, but Brody said it was only under local jurisdiction.

I haven't heard anything. In 2029 the 1933 version of King Kong goes into public domain. Toho should redo their version of King Kong vs Godzilla. They won't need permission at that point either.

It's a Godzilla movie, not a documentary about global politics in the late 1940s. Just roll with it and enjoy the ride.
