The film is structured nonchronologically. Different scenes take place in different years, spread over the eight-year period, moving sometimes ahead sometimes back in time. It is explained that Tina gets together with Rachel every year on Cass's birthday. That's why near the beginning, in the diner, when Tina has sunglasses and is dishevelled, she's obviously in bad shape, but just a few minutes later in the movie Tina has a different hairstyle and looks much better, that's because it's two or three years later. My recollection is that those scenes where Alexia Fast is on-screen portraying Cass, she's supposed to be 16, 17, and perhaps 18.
