I would like an explanation of part of the movie. The part is when the father meets up with his daughter on the highway near the woods. The daughter appears to hint that the father had abused her. Then the kidnapper shoots the father and appears to kill him. But the father is shown alive and no more reference to this incident in the movie. Can anyone explain this?
Appears to kill him? Not really. Matt (Ryan Reynolds) is shot with a tranquilizer dart. It is very evident in his side as he falls to the ground. The shooter even said that they had to leave because he would be awake again in about 10 minutes.
Cass had been promised a meeting with her dad in return for continuing to do her "job" of luring others online for her captor. She was instructed that if she tried to leave or tell her father anything about where she was that he would be killed. Hope that helps.
The daughter appears to hint that the father had abused her
Admittedly i did not fully understand what the daughter was trying to convey to him by bringing up the "gimmick" vs "trick" thing from the past, but I do not think she hinted that the father had abused her at all.

As the person said above.. it was a tranquilizer dart, plainly seen hanging outa the guys side.
Also, there actually was a further reference to the incident.. I think it is when the father is on the phone with the obnoxious cop, telling him about the couple in the diner. reply share
I think the whole business with gimmick versus trick was her way of saying, "I'm speaking to you in code now." She then proceeds to tell her father to go to the ice rink, while she sends her abductors there at the same time. I guess she doesn't know whether to call this action a gimmick or a trick, but it's not important as long as she conveys her plan to him.
There was never any hint that her father abused her.
