Kidnapping thriller with the 'Fargo' tone
Not having much choice on the movie channels I decided to give 'The captive' a try. Only by looking the movie up on the net I discovered that it was a Canadian movie with american actors in it. That of course gave me the doubts as to whether I would enjoy it or not. However I was surprised, it was enjoyable thriller. The film had a haunting atmosphere which keeps the viewer interested to see how it concludes. Very reminiscent to 'silence of the lambs' the movie has a very slow pace. One would have to watch with full concentration in order to enjoy.
Good performance from Ryan Reynolds who plays the grieving father. Rosario Dawson did not have much to show. But she played her part well.
The film could have received a rating higher it is was not for for the plot holes and flaws. Why no background to the abductor character? How was the girl brought up over the 8 years that she managed to accept her surroundings? and 'why was the abductor not seen when he visited his accomplice in prison?. Besides this the film had a good ending, but personally I felt that it could have been more bitter.
