Or The Babadook? It seems a lot of people hated this because they thought it was slow and boring. Is it slow in the same way that The Witch was slow? Because personally I didn't find The Witch boring at all I thought it was brilliant.
To the people who have seen all 4 (This one, The Babadook, The Witch, It Follows)
I've seen all four. They're all wildly different types of horror movie, as you know, so comparing them is hard, but if you're just looking for opinions, here's mine!
- I absolutely loved THE WITCH and actually didn't find it slow the way some others did; it built tension steadily from the opening scene and gave zero relief until the end.
- The beginning of THE BABADOOK felt like it might have a pacing problem, because it was unclear where it was headed, but once the gist of the plot kicked in I felt like it was really quite fast-paced and had a lot of great dread-building moments. I wasn't thrilled with the ending but I otherwise thought it was great.
- Full disclosure: I'd been looking forward to IT FOLLOWS for months when I finally saw it in theatres. I hated it. There were a few scenes of creepiness that made me hopeful, but nothing paid off for me. It felt slow and dull and it never gained enough traction to redeem itself in my eyes. I do plan to watch it again on Netflix to see if maybe I can appreciate it more a second time around, though.
- I feel like David Lynch fans will get the most out of A GIRL... because of its moodiness and moments of bizarro-reality. Visually it's gorgeous and there was a lot to like, but the pacing was a problem for me; I found my mind wandering a lot, and I'm usually very patient. It didn't really feel like a scary/horror movie to me.
Just my take, but your choices for comparison are interesting ones!
LOVED the witch. thought it was amazing and loved the tension. it wasn't slow for me at all. 9/10.
Badabook was just ok for me, like 5/10.
It Follows had a good scene or two, but otherwise really flat. i give it 4/10.
A Girl was very artsy. i liked it, especially since it didn't seem like it had a big budget, but the script was too bare imo. i give it 6/10, but that's me being generous.
The witch was awful. The Babadook was god awful. It follows was one of the scariest movies in recent memory. this movie is nothing like any of those movies but a great new take on the vampire genre. almost like George Romero's Martin but the female version.
Neither of those films are "awful" lol. Don't be an idiot.
Personally I thought It Follows was nothing more than average and NOT scary in the slightest bit. I can't call it a bad film though just because it wasn't for me...
