The Outsider

I'm not actually playing the game; I'm watching while my husband plays. So I'm more interested in the story. Does anyone know the story behind The Outsider character? It seems that he is the leader of some kind of pseudo-religious cult of assassins and that Corvo is one of his followers. But what is The Outsiders' significance to the events in the story? The things he says don't seem to be clues to anything, nor does he seem to direct Corvo in any way. Being a writer, I like characters to have purpose. Any clue as to what The Outsiders' purpose is?

Since this game incorporates magic, the Outsider is pretty much like Jesus, one can actually see him from time to time and when the game is finished, he narrates like Ron Perlman does in Fallout. The main problem with this game is that the characters just serve to connect missions together where you either kill stuff or evade it. It could've been amazing.

The outsider is I guess kind of like a pagan god. He gives Corvo his magical powers and he also seems to be at work with the more supernatural elements of the game.

I don't think he really has an alliance, or an agenda in the game's plot. I get the impression that he's just a bored god who simply sits back and watches the drama of the world play out for entertainment. And occasionally, just to spice things up, he gives one of them phenominal cosmic powers.

SPOILERS

The Outsider appears to be a personification of a great Leviathan (or whale) who are essentially the gods of the Dishonored universe.
