This show suffers from living in the shadow of Breaking Bad

I enjoy this show but must admit it is no where near the quality of some of my favorite shows such as Breaking Bad, House of Cards and Boardwalk Empire. But with that said I still enjoy watching it, but my general impression is that people compare it to the high quality of breaking bad therefore it will be doomed from the start. Who knows when I will like a show as much as I have enjoyed Breaking Bad. Just take it for what it is!

Mostly it just suffers from bad writing.

I'd say it suffers more from having a complete dearth of charismatic actors. The female cop, the IA guy, and *maybe* the homeless cop + war vet are the only people that have shown me anything worth watching.

The two main characters (and I don't think this is all on the actors) are so uninteresting, that it makes the whole thing tough to watch at times.

It rhymes with Freak

This is a very important point. In addition to Bryan Cranston and Steve Buscemi being very gifted comic actors, these shows have other characters--Saul Goodman, Eddie Kessler, Jesse Pinkman, Nelson Van Alden-- who are generally good for at least one good laugh per episode. Comic releif has been an integral part of this type of show going all the way back to Oz and The Sopranos. I'm trying to remember Low Winter Sun making me laugh, and coming up blank.

*shrug*

I've laughed every episode at one thing or another.

The point is that the tone is predominantly lugubrious, which most people find a tedious experience over multiple eps.

Wow, this is exactly what I've been feeling about this show since recently trying to start getting into it (and failing). It's just too dismal in the mood it cultivates and broadcasts.

Maybe I don't mind unrelentingly gloomy (which is weird because I also count myself a fan of some real crowd pleasers and schmaltzy stuff). Some of my favorite films are, and I've heard people make complaints along those lines before.

Complex crime dramas that last more than one season are rare. Some that are lucky to make it to season 2 but had ratings trouble in their first season find themselves compromised creatively from network interference. Representation of current crime drama genre on tv are bland play it safe procedurals. So any new show breaking into genre that wants to be taken seriously has to have fantastic writing , execution and character development right off the bat.

Low winter sun has great performances and cinematography but that not enough to make a show great.

You guys that mention lugubrious and dismal are spot on. The show just seems so unremittingly grim and depressing that I trudge through most episodes. I'm one of the native Detroiters watching out of loyalty and the scenery but i wish they would have shown at least a few of the nice Detroit landmarks as there are many.
