So whats wrong with a father teaching his daughter self-defense?

Maddy didnt beat up the bully for kicks, he had it coming..

reply

because stereotypical sexist town teachers think that women cant fight.

Theres also the fact that in school it does not mater who is the bully, only who complained.

Nothing wrong with teaching some self defense... But personally I would leave out the whole fancy back-heel-kick-to-the-face part ;)

Cant argue with it's effectiveness though :)

So skip the effective training and teach her to bite, claw, and slap?

reply

She didn't bite, claw, or slap him down to his knees in the first place so what are you talking about. Their thinking was that the punch to the stomach would probably have incapacitated him, making him bleed was training taking over the correct assessment of the situation - which can sometimes be a bad thing.

nothing.

Nothing wrong with it, though I think the film manifestation of "girl power" is getting tiresome! After all it's not as if girls don't bully other girls...but of course if a bully needs to get beaten up, naturally the bully HAS to be a boy!!!

reply

Bingo. And girls bully boys because they ate told boys can't hit girls but that doesn't translate to films
Where the boy power?

Where the boy power?

In every aspect of everything in real life?

reply

Nothing. That kid deserved it. It only angered the parents because they probably know that he DID do it and were embarrassed (that their son was a bully and that he had his ass handed to him by a girl). So their natural reaction was to point the finger at the girl.

personally, more power to her for sticking up for herself.

as far as the movie is concerned though...

- they were new in town, so the locals were already untrusting of them, add on the fact that a little girl beat up a boy bigger than her.

- the cop, or the counselor, mentioned that the boy was special needs. not to mention his mother is an abusive meth head with a crazy brother that everyone in town is afraid of.
