It's HER house, so George boards with her, presumably for a price (pittance though it might be - she is a generous and warm-hearted woman). That is hardly the same as "shacking up."
shareAgreed. I think it's understandable that, upon returning from the war, he moved back in with his sister, who's now living in Miss Mardle's house. She seems to have plenty of room in that place.

Ms. Mardle is a woman of "independent means" after her brother left her money and the house.
