'Good luck' before a play?

I just watched the last episode of the first season when Mr Selfridge goes to Ellen Love to wish her "good luck"! Was that something someone would say before a play at the time? Just curious.

Of course, it was early 1900.

Do you mean as opposed to "break a leg?" Looks like that started around the 1920s just from Internet searching some articles.
