New promo! (Series 4)

So, the new promo is here, as series four starts jan. 6. https://itvstudios.com/programmes/mr-selfridge What do you guys think? I really liked it; it seems like the new series will be worth watching. Also it might not be so depressing as I suspected. Anyone else agree?

It seems to be blocked to US users, unfortunately! :-(

Oh, no! I live in Sweden and I could view it, so I thought it'd be open to other countries as well. I wonder who else can/cannot see it? Seems strange. :/

It has got the Dolly sisters in it, Lady Mae and Harry's son ... Miss Mardle seems to have moved in with her former lover (?). "The former lover" - what was his name again? - is out with his family (lots of children) in an open car in the country. Harry gambles a lot (no surprise there) and has some trouble with sketchy types who wants his money. Lush clothing and jewellery.

Even the YouTube sneak peek is geographically restricted!

Thanks for the summary. I just realized there's a press release and am downloading it now.

Did you notice ITV pushed S4 to Friday? That's unfortunate. Oh well, this is the final series anyways.

reply

You are welcome.

No, I didn't notice. How weird. But in any case, it feels kinda right to wrap up the series now, don't you think?

Thank you for the link! It certainly makes me want to see series 4; I am especially happy about Lady Mae's return. But no Victor? I didn´t see him at least, and he is one my favorites. Also, with all the betting, I imagine the season will be rather grim for Mr. Selfridge; we'll see :-)

reply

You're welcome. :) I think Victor will be in series four; didn't they show a rather large marquee that said "Colleano's"? If so, then it would seem that things are going well for him. I agree with you; I like Victor too. He seems sympathetic somehow.

Victor "is" in season 4. His business will be booming and he will have a boxing match at his venue, brining in lots of rich people.

reply

I agree. Though I do think Mr Selfridge would have lasted a tad longer had it been a massive Downton like hit (perhaps into the 1930s), it's still hampered by being based on real life people. I've seen more than one person declare the show depressing because of how Harry Gordon Selfridge ends up.

reply

Yes, we tend to want happy endings to everything ... even though that is not how real life works. But of course one doesn't like to be reminded of it. Especially not, perhaps, when one seeks to be entertained. It is hard, however, to see how they could have done it differently. On the whole, I think they've done a pretty good job. Loving the clothes!

Remember too, that the Downton characters are (very) loosely based on the real people who lived there. Or rather, they've taken inspiration from them. I see your point though!

They've un-blocked it. I just watched it. Nice costumes, but as last year, I'm not enjoying watching Harry unravel.

reply

No, me neither. But I was pleasantly surprised in how much less depressing it seemed to be, than I had imagined. I guess we'll have to wait and see. :)

I'm reminded of the ending of the original Upstairs Downstairs. I was very depressed by the final two episodes, but within the context of the story the series was telling, it fit. Harry’s life post Rose is tragic, but it makes Mr Selfridge a more intriguing series knowing that everything isn't going to be wrapped up in a cozy package.

Oh, I totally agree. But I also have to admit that I will enjoy watching this series/season once, and not likely to go back and rewatch the dvds from my library (as I do with so many others).

reply

Wow, didn't think they would jump nine years! That's quite a leap.

[Possible spoilers ahead.]

I'm glad to see Lady Mae is back and Loxley is nowhere to be seen. I'm hoping they show more of Gordon Jr.'s secret life with Grace - Oliver Selfridge would be born by this time and to be honest, I'd rather follow that story than more scenes at Colleanos club.

I agree it doesn't seem as depressing as I thought it would be - but it is a promo. Setting it in 1928 makes me think the majority of the series will be a mix of Harry's innovations and his vices. He doesn't lose the company until after the Great Depression in the early 40s, right? So perhaps they'll end it around the stock market crash of 1929. I could see Harry giving one final uplifting speech to his employees to try to reassure them of the future. So the series could end hopeful, but of course we know how it turns out.
