Great movie, but I don't get why Derek HAD to kill to survive. Aubrey had what was essentially a blood slave in Maurice, as she clearly fed from him multiple times. So why couldn't Derek do the same?
Aubrey says a kill must be made every five days. Killing and draining 5 pints of blood from a victim (conservative, an adult human carries twice this amount) every 5 days adds up to a healthy vampire diet of 1 pint per day.
The Red Cross collects blood by the pint. They claim a donor will replenish the pint in 1 week for plasma / 6 weeks for red blood cells. So one pint of blood costs a donor 6 weeks of time, or 42 days, if sustainability is a key goal, and it is.
So a vampire would need 42 donors to get 42 pints of blood every six weeks on a rotation of donors assuming their aren't any other issues like death, police shootings, scurvy, or resignations. In other words, a vampire needs a small army of groupies to pull off a kill-free diet.
Management of such a group may prove difficult in a clandestine operation.
Managing the emotional state of a groupie army: Do the groupies get jealous? Is it best to separate them? How many groupies will reliably believe they're the heir vampire? Will they kill each other?
Finding reliable groupies: Groupies typically want to be a vampire. They're scum of the earth. It's a big coffee stain on any resume.
Etiquette: 420 friendly, vegan, and omnivorous are taste preferences. Garlic is not. Does etiquette permit a vampire to avoid Italians because of dietary concerns?
Larger groups and Orgy dens: Assuming the groupies aren't territorial, an orgy den may be a possibility. Unfortunately, larger groups gain more attention. Will the neighbors complain? Will the fire marshall get all up in the vampire's *beep* and start being an *beep*
In the end, a kill free diet is a lifestyle choice. It requires commitment but can be very worthwhile and lead to a more active, fulfilling vampire life. If made to take the high road in the moral dilemma of vampirism, care must be taken to treat the vampire blood slaves with compassion.
OP, if you actually would have paid attention you would know that Audrey told Derek that if he didn't feed in regular intervals of no more than 5 days then he would eventually go completely mad, turn uncontrollable savage vampire that kills constantly.
Twilight is an insult to Vampires. Warm Bodies is an insult to Zombies.
