So its... over?!

Just confirming that this show is actually over? Season 3 blatantly appeared to be a hastily made series as the writer(s) scrambled to shoddily add meaning to an otherwise meaningless end which in turn led to so many humongous plotholes.

I really wanted to know the reason it ended so soon. It could have gone on for at least a few more seasons in the least. Did the writer get bored of writing?(lol) This show had the near perfect blend of the magic realism factor which is so completely missing in most shows that are thriving nowadays. I have seen shows like Supernatural, Once upon a time, Grimm, and shows like these are thriving whereas as shows that are made to appear and sound credible do not last. Some time ago, I was glued to Carnivale, but they took that off air as well. Rome ended with a whimper compared to Spartacus which flourished[not that any of these are bad]. Its always shows which are made realistically that get the stick.

Uhh how did Rome end with a whimper? Cleopatra and Antony die. Atia shows how she is still the HBIC, they save Caesarion, Voreenus dies after reconciliation with his family, Octavian is emperor. What more would you have wanted for a send off? They were kind of constrained by history.

reply

The show was called Rome and I guess was about 'Rome', unless they misinterpreted the whole thing and attributed Octavius and Rome as one and the same thing.

Hemlock Grove and Spartacus were made "realistically"?

I think you might be talking more about tone than anything else, in which case I might agree. But alas, a lot of shows have a certain pace to them that eventually wears off as the writers try to do things bigger and "better" than the previous season. There's a terribly tiresome issue with some writers/producers constantly trying to one-up their previous work that it just ends up absurd and stupid.

But no... I wouldn't say any of the shows you mentioned were done in any way "realistically". Unless you think the idea of sparkling vampires is less realistic than ones with stretchy faces and werewolves who burst out of their own skin...

I was talking about the blend between the real and the un-real. Too much of effects while good for the visual, also makes one feel that the action may be set in a parallel universe. But that is totally besides the point. I was simply curious to know why they had to cease production after just 3 seasons when there could have been potentially more.

Why did it end so soon? I'm not sure why it would keep going, even though I've enjoyed the show at times.

It's never been especially well received, and has garnered mixed reviews at best from critics. We don't know how many people are watching it, but Netflix has those numbers, and I assume they find the return they are getting no longer worth the cost of producing it. Look at how minimal the traffic is on this board in the immediate wake of a new seasons release, it's a fraction of what you see for many of their other shows. I doubt they believe this show is something that will bring new members or keep old ones with the service. Nor is it something that they view as show that builds the reputation of their brand to any great degree. They probably feel they would be better off spending the money on other projects for hopefully a greater return.
