What's up with Famke Janssen's accent?

Just watched ep1. Was she supposed to be going for a british accent?

reply

She was trying to go for a Mid-Atlantic/Transatlantic accent. Olivia would have picked it up when she was an actress I'm assuming.

In the first season it was a horrible attempt at a British accent, that kept fading in and out. I guess since it was so terrible & inconsistent, they decided to scrap it for seasons 2 and 3 and hope that the viewers wouldn't notice.

They actually wrote the reason for why she lost the accent. When Roman bit off her tongue and Pryce reattached it, it was gone. It's explained.

It was not an attempt at a British accent, obviously. She was trying to do Mid-Atlantic/Transatlantic accent. The reasoning would be that Olivia picked up the accent (it's an "invented" accent, not attached to a geographical location) while she was a stage actress (it was popular among stage and film actresses) in the early 20th century. It ties into the Olivia character in that her entire persona is invented, including her accent.

And, no, an explanation for the disappearance of the accent was offered in season 2.

While there was an explanation for the accent going away, I think the writers found out how much fans hated it and found a reason to make it disappear.
